Morphological Studies on the Parotid Gland of Korean Fetuses

Abstract
Three hundred and ninety nine parotid glands of Korean fetuses (male 212, female 187) aged from the fifth month to the tenth month in utero were studied on their shapes and growth.
1. The antero-posterior, supero-inferior and medio-lateral diameter of the parotid gland in the fifth month of fetal age, were 11.39 mm, 9.38 mm and 6.41 mm respectively. These measurements increased regularly as the increase of the age of the fetuses. Finally at the last month in utero, the measurements were 2.6 times in antero-posterior diameter, 2.7 times in supero-inferior diameter and 3.0 times in medio-lateral diameter, as compared with the fifth month measurements,
2. The antero-posterior, supero-inferior and medio-lateral diameter of the deep lobe of the parotid gland in the fifth month were 6.39 mm, 5.27 mm, and 4.37 mm respectively. These measurements increased regularly as the progress of the age of the fetuses. Finally at the last month in utero, the measurements were 1.8 times in antero-posterior and supero-inferior diameter, and 2.8 times in medio-lateral diameter, as compared with the fifth month measurements.
3. The antero-posterior and supero-inferior diameter of the accessory parotid gland in the fifth month were 1.76 mm and 1.57 mm respectively. These measurements increased regularly as the increase of the age of the fetuses. Finally at the last month in utero, the measurements were 3.7 times in antero-posterior diameter and 2.6 times in supero-inferior diameter, as compared with the fifth month measurements,
4. The shape of the parotid gland was irregular quadrilateral in the fifth and sixth months, and after seventh month it became rhomboid with greater development supero-inferiorly.
5. The shape of the accessory parotid gland was triangular in the fifth and sixth months, and after seventh month it became round and ellipsoid.
6. Frequency of the occurrences of the accessory parotid gland was 32.3% (male 33.01, female 31.5 % ).
7. Index of the supero-inferior diameter to antero-posterior diameter of the parotid gland decreased rapidly from fifth to seventh months, and after eighth month it slightly increased.
8. Relation of the anterior border of the parotid gland with the outer surface of the masseter muscle:
In the fifth fetal month, the anterior border of the parotid gland was separated from the posterior margin of the masseter muscle.
In the sixth and seventh months of fetal age, the anterior border of the parotid gland began to cover the outer surface of the masseter muscle.
In the eighth and ninth months of fetal age, the parotid gland covered one-fifth of the outer surface of the masseter muscle posteriorly, and at the last month in utero, covered one.fourth.
9. Relation of the inferior angle of the parotid gland with the mandibular angle:
The inferior angle of the parotid gland was located postero-superiorly from the mandibular angle throughout the fetal period.
10. The origin of the parotid duct from the anterior border of the parotid gland:
During the fifth fetal month, the parotid duct originated from the middle portion of the anterior border, and at the last month in utero, it originated from the upper one-third of the anterior border.
11. The course of the parotid duct:
During the fifth fetal month, the parotid duct traversed horizontally, and at the last month of fetal age, it declined inferiorly.
12. Positional relationship between the accessory parotid gland and the parotid duct:
During the fifth fetal month, the accessory parotid gland located above the parotid duct, and at the tenth month of the fetal age, it covered the parotid duct.
13. No significant data were found between the male and female.
14. No significant racial difference between Japanese fetus and Korean fetus was noticeable.
